Ensemble CONCEPT/21 - 2016-2017 Season Outline

Ensemble CONCEPT/21 (EC/21), a new music ensemble at Indiana University South Bend thrives in performing and presenting music of the 21st century to new audiences, with a special emphasis in featuring works by young composers from the Midwest.

Directed by Spanish-American composer Jorge Muñiz, EC/21 includes three exciting programs in its 2015-2016 season, bringing a diverse selection of compositions from across the Atlantic. All performances are preceded by informal conversations with visiting composers and the audience.

The theme of this year is “Celebrations!” With this theme, we would like to recognize three major commemorations of this year: the Bicentennial of the State of Indiana, the Centennial of Indiana University South Bend, and the 25th Anniversary of our home, the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend. For this reason, we have commissioned a new major work to Don Freund, Professor of Music, Composition at Indiana University Bloomington. In addition, we are premiering a new work by Eric Saroian, whose work “A Cardinal’s Flight” was selected through our call for scores to our young composers in our area. Closing the concert, we are performing a new work, “Water Moods,” by Spanish Composer Pablo Moras (part of our program “Music Across the Atlantic”) and “Ex Unum,” by IU South Bend composer alumnus Ethan Kampa. All composers will be in attendance in a concert entitled “Pride of Indiana - New Voices in Michiana.” This concert will take place at IU South Bend on Friday, April 7 at 7pm.

In addition, we are also recognizing the great talent of American composers of Latino heritage in a concert on Sunday, November 13 at 7pm, including works by Gabriela Frank, Osvaldo Golijov, Gustavo Leone, and Roberto Sierra, with guest soprano Jessica Bush.

The 2016-2017 season is made possible thanks to the support from the Florence V. Carroll Charitable Trust.
