Ensemble CONCEPT/21 - Second Season Outline
Ensemble CONCEPT/21 (EC/21), a new music ensemble at Indiana University South Bend thrives in performing and presenting music of the 21st century to new audiences, with a special emphasis in featuring works by young composers from the Midwest.
Directed by Spanish-American composer Jorge Muñiz, EC/21 includes three exciting programs in its 2015-2016 season, bringing a diverse selection of compositions from across the Atlantic. All performances are preceded by informal conversations with visiting composers and the audience.
In the first program of its second season, the ensemble will be featuring works by distinguished composers from the Catalan Association of Composers, a composers organization from Catalonia (Spain). The members of Ensemble CONCEPT/21 are delighted to present these works in Chicago as part of the 10th Latino Music Festival.
The second season offers also the concert “New Voices in Michiana,” a tradition in the ensemble, which will include a call for compositions from our young composers in the area (high school, undergraduate, and graduate). These works will be selected by the music director, musician members, and a professional composer. In addition, works by young composers from our partner institution, Conservatory of Asturias in Spain will be premiered. The American and Spanish compositions will be performed at another concert in Spain during the Spring of 2016.
For the third and last concert of the season, we are honoring a great and very distinct voice of the American/Catalan composition landscape: Leonardo Balada. He has not only produced some of the most exquisite American works in the past fifty years, but his music offers compositional statements that are both unique and influential, as well as being an inspiration to new generations of composers: he is true maverick.
Leonardo Balada has confirmed the attendance to rehearsals and concert, as well as participation on the pre-concert conversation with the music director. Young composers from the area will have the opportunity to meet them during their visit, which will be extremely stimulating and beneficial.
